The Jilin University Library, formerly the Library of the Northeastern Administrative College, was founded in Harbin in 1946. It was renamed the Northeastern People's University Library in 1952 and the Jilin University Library in 1958.
Currently, the Jilin University Library comprises eight buildings: the Dingxin Library, the Central Library, the Engineering Library, the Medical Library, the Earth Science Library, the Information Science Library, the Agricultural Library, and the Law Library. With a total floor area of 111,200 square meters, the library provides 7,263 reading seats for on-campus readers, forming a comprehensive "six districts and eight libraries" system. Each of these eight libraries possesses unique characteristics and strengths in resource allocation and functional services, while complementing each other to create a comprehensive information service center that embodies the profound spirit and cultural heritage of Jilin University.
As the university's information service center, the Jilin University Library is committed to providing excellent resources and information to support and serve the university's academic research, including education and teaching, scientific research and innovation. The library consistently adheres to the principles of "highlighting characteristics, optimizing structure, and focusing on effectiveness" in its document resource development. To date, the library has gradually established a comprehensive collection system comprised of diverse resources, essentially achieving comprehensive coverage of all disciplines and a collection of distinctively distinctive documents. The library's total collection currently stands at 7.21 million volumes, including 6.19 million print books, 1.02 million bound journals, and 2.48 million electronic books. A total of 219 Chinese and foreign databases have been imported, providing strong information support for the university's "Double First-Class" goals and for teaching and research in key and promising disciplines.
Jilin University Library is the Northeast Regional Center of the China Higher Education Documentation and Information System (CALIS), a member of the University Digital Library International Cooperation Program (CADAL), a Northeast Regional Center of the Chinese University Humanities and Social Sciences Documentation Center (CASHL), a central library for imported humanities books from the Ministry of Education, a foreign textbook center for chemistry from the Ministry of Education, a second-batch national key ancient book protection unit from the Ministry of Culture, a science and technology novelty retrieval station from the Ministry of Education, and the headquarters of the Jilin Provincial Higher Education Library Committee.
In recent years, the library has consistently prioritized interlibrary academic exchange and has established business relationships and document exchange with numerous academic institutions and libraries in over 30 countries and regions. Jilin University Library is moving towards the goal of becoming a comprehensive, research-oriented, open and intelligent complex university library.
